A heavyweight in the world of jazz! Chico Freeman, the multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer is always looking for new ways of expression to continue the heritage and tradition of jazz in a new guise. Many critics consider him one of the greats in the history of jazz and few artists can boast such an impressive list of collaborations with musical personalities: Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Charles Mingus, Jack De Johnette, Art Blakey, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Hank Jones, Freddie Cole, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Roy Haynes By Freeman, Arthur Blythe, Billy Hart, Lester Bowie, Cecil McBee, Kirk Lightsey, John Hicks, Mal Waldron, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Eurythmics, The Temptations, The Four Tops, and many others. His guest appearances in South America range from Puerto Rico to Cuba and from the Dominican Republic to Brazil, including with such greats as Tito Puente, Machito, Irakere, Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Celia Cruz, Giovanni Hidalgo, Paulinho DaCosta, Ray Barretto and Eddie Palmieri.
In Europe, Chico Freeman met the Fritz Pauer Trio in 2007 during an engagement in the Vienna Jazz Land. In his own words: “The chemistry was instantaneous and undeniable…” After a successful tour the following year, it is decided to document the fruitful collaboration: The new double CD “Essence of Silence ” (Jive Music, Edel Vertrieb), with pieces by Chico, Fritz and Johannes, as well as George Cables, Thelonious Monk and Mc Coy Tyner is available in stores since January 2011.
