Matthieu Bordenave is a French saxophonist and clarinettist who lives in Munich. Starting with classical saxophone playing, he went to Paris at the age of 17, where he studied jazz saxophone. He entered the Paris National Conservatory (CNSM) and studied in the jazz and improvised music department. He continued his musical education at the Musikhochschule in Munich, where he graduated with a Master of Music, and was also awarded the DAAD prize.
BR Klassik describes him as “one of the outstanding figures in contemporary European jazz. His tone paintings are timeless pictures of enchanting beauty and power”.
So far, two recordings with the trio “Le Café Bleu International” have been released by Enja Records. There he released his quartet project “Grand Angle” in 2017 with the CD title “Terre de Sienne”. In February 2018 he made his debut on the legendary label ECM Records with the Shinya Fukumori Trio.

More information about Matthieu Bordenave and the current tour dates can be found here.

Furthermore Matthieu Bordenave released his new album La traversée on ECM today.

The first album of French saxophonist Matthieu Bordenave on ECM under his own name introduces a new project with German pianist Florian Weber and Swiss bassist Patrice Moret. On La traversée – ‘The Crossing’ – Bordenave explores an area between contemporary composition and jazz, subtly influenced by the innovations of the Jimmy Giuffre Trio with Paul Bley and Steve Swallow, which “opened up new territory that is still relevant for improvisers today”.
