Kellylee Evans is playing the opening concert for jazzahead! Festival in Bremen on April 14, 2022

Canadian jazz and soul singer Kellylee Evans is stepping in at short notice for the opening concert of this year’s jazzahead! Festival on 14 April 2022. Five years ago, she was already a guest at jazzahead! – back then for a Showcase Concert.

Born in Scarborough/Toronto in 1975, jazz and soul singer Kellylee Evans is considered very versatile and has won several prizes during her career, including one at the renowned Thelonious Monk Competition. Her current album “Greenlight”, which she made in 2021 after a seven-year recording absence, is characterised by strong resilience in times of pandemic. This was no easy task for the singer from Canada, who is still recovering from a bizarre accident in which she was struck by lightning. Recorded during the lockdown, Kellylee offers insights into her own vulnerability in strange times on “Greenlight”. “Some of the songs I sing about are about mental health and supporting people in those moments,” she explains, “A lot of it is about my own life.”

Kellylee Evans and her band have been winning over audiences for 15 years with their soul music, but also with excursions into jazz, R&B, hip-hop and pop – a tribute to Nina Simone also won a Juno Award.

“We came up with her name very quickly in our search for an adequate replacement,” says project manager Sybille Kornitschky, “and are very happy that she can step in at short notice with her band.” And Peter Schulze, one of the two artistic directors of jazzahead!, is also pleased: “We were able to lure her at short notice from a France tour to the festival opening concert of jazzahead!
